Oamenii Bajau nu au cetăţenie şi nu au drepturi la facilităţi sau la şcoli. În loc să înveţe să matematică sau biologie, copii bajau învaţă cum să prindă peşti, crabi sau caracatiţe. Se zice că datorită faptului că petrec atât de mult timp sub apă ochii lor văd mai clar sub apă decât oamenii obişnuiţi.
