Uneori detaliile contează, iar pentru a le valorifica a fost înființat concursul Small World Photomicrography. Concursul a devenit popular în rândurile oamenilor de știință, cât și a fotografilor. Cea de-a 43 ediția a adunat circa 2000 de participanți din 88 de țări ale lumii.

Fotografia Macro reprezintă practica de a face o fotografie printr-un microscop sau un dispozitiv de mărire similar. Scopul este de a surprinde detaliile complicate ale lucrurilor invizibile pentru ochiul uman.

Locul I în acest an, i-a revenit unui cercetătorilor de la Institutul de Cancer din Olanda, Facultatea BioImaging, Departamentul de Biologie Celulară, care au reușit să facă o fotografie macro a celulelor pielii umane care reprezintă keratina marcată fluorescent.
